Synopsis

1,135,789. That’s how many subscribers sixteen-year-old West Ryder has on his web vlog series. But he only has eyes for one of them.

As one of the internet’s most prestigious video bloggers, West talks about high school relationships under the name “Sam Green.” As far as he knows, no one from school, not even his best friend, Cat, has seen his videos. But the highlight of the whole thing is Harper Knight, who comments every day at exactly 2:02 in the afternoon. He doesn’t know anything about her aside from the occasional deep philosophical messaging on why pizza tastes so delicious, but as stupid as it sounds, he might be falling for her. So when they finally agree to meet in real life, West’s hope for romance seems more and more in reach. But that all changes as soon as he arrives at their meeting spot and sees Cat walking toward him, wearing the same “I ❤ Sam Green” T-shirt Harper promised she’d have on.

To his alarm, West realizes he is falling in love with the best friend who has always been a sister to him.

My Review

Rating: 3 stars

When I read this synopsis, I loved the innocence that this book exuded. It’s been a while since I’ve read a YA novel. It was sweet and refreshing to be reminded of a time when life was a bit simpler. It put a smile on my face to read about young love and all the emotions that realizing that feeling brings.

The story was cute and the characters were dorks. I think this is what I liked most about the story. I loved how dorky they were. West and Cat loved Harry Potter and ice cream and were never ashamed to admit it. I loved them for their individuality and quirkiness. West is utterly in denial about his feelings for Cat. The story really centers on how West finds out Cat has feelings for him and the process he goes through in figuring out his feelings for her.

The story is told strictly from West Ryder AKA Sam Green’s POV, which was where my first issue with this book lies. I’m not a man, nor have I ever been. However, I just don’t think that a 16 year old boy acts and talks the way West did in this book. I felt like West was the girl in the relationship and Cat was the boy. West seemed freaked out about being physical in any way with Cat and constantly avoided it. To me this did not seem what the average teenage boy would feel. He also constantly analyzed his feelings – another trait I don’t think a boy would have at that age. Had Mr. Augustine made Cat the main character going through the same feelings West did, I think the story would have been a lot more believable.

The second issue I had with this book was the relationship between West and his father. West’s mother died six months ago while she was driving in a car driven by his father, who was drunk. West blames his father for her death and his father has treated him horribly since then. Your heart broke for West and his broken family. I want a resolution. I wanted something to change. Instead, I got nothing. There was no redemption, no forgiveness – nothing. I felt like this storyline was left unresolved and unaddressed. I just have a hard time accepting that the way West handled their final interaction was how their relationship would forever be.

If you want a quick read with a sweet, light story that is strictly PG, then this is the book for you. I’d even recommend young pre-teens/teens read this one, so it may be a good one to share with one of your children.
